Ananda Vikatan
Vikatan was started by S. S. Vasan in 1928 when he purchased a humour magazine that was not doing well for Rs. 200. Working hard, he built it up into a weekly and soon the weekly scaled to the top and the best selling Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan is still running successfully after nearly eighty years. Veteran journalist and media personality, S. Balasubramanian served as the editor, managing director and publisher of the magazine for nearly 50 years till 2006.[1] In addition to making the magazine a trendsetter for more than 4 decades directly as chief editor, he also mentored generations of journalists and writers personally even starting the famous "Manavar Thittam" or student journalism scheme that is still functioning after close to 30 years. He also created Junior Vikatan, the first, boldest and most widely read investigative (twice a week) journal in Tamil successfully in the 80's in addition to his many accomplishments at Vikatan's helm. He was the son of S. S. Vasan and continues to be Chairman Emeritus of the group after handing over the reins to his son B. Srinivasan.
Vikatan has now evolved as Vikatan group and became an icon in the Tamil Nadu magazine industry. Vikatan over the years has provided the opportunity for many great Tamil writers such as Kalki Krishnamurthy, Devan, Sujatha Rangarajan, Gnani, Madhan, and Nadodi, to name a few. Cartoons and illustration also flourished with Artist Maya, 'Mali' Mahalingam, Madhan, Sridhar, Silpi, Thanu and Gopulu.
Now Rajumurugan, Peyon, S.Ramakrishnnan and Jeyamohan are some of the well-known contributors to Vikatan.
