It is published by the North West of Ireland Printing & Publishing Co. Ltd. The Ulster Herald hosts the main printing press in the region (Gortrush Industrial Estate), so the same team that contributes to the Herald, also contribute to other local papers, such as the Strabane Chronicle, Fermanagh Herald and Tyrone Herald.

The newspaper was founded in 1901, and retained much of the same format until 2001, when a major reformat took place. This new format helped the paper claim the Newspaper Society’s Weekly Newspaper of the Year awards for 2003 and 2004.

From the 22 June 2006 issue, a new compact format was established, following almost unanimous requests from the readership. It has been reflected that after this unveiling of a compact edition that some readers now hark back to the days of the County’s oldest newspaper being a broadsheet.

The current title editor is Nigel McDonagh.

The paper’s circulation, for the January to June 2010 period, is 12,311. The circulation increased from 10,000 in 1998 to 12,500 in 2003.

The area is one of the main administrative centres in Northern Ireland including the Area Headquarters of both the Education and Health Boards and the new North/South Councils. It is a well-known location for tourism and is the Ecclesiastical Capital of All-Ireland.

In addition to administration and tourism, agriculture is one of the main providers of employment and the Armagh area is especially known as the ‘Garden of Ulster’, where there is a predominance of vegetable and fruit production.

The Tyrone Constitution was established in 1844, the oldest newspaper in the county, and one of the longest-running in Northern Ireland. It circulates in a wide area of Tyrone, stretching from the Clogher Valley in the South to the Sperrin Mountains in the North and also penetrates into North Fermanagh. Omagh, the market county town of Tyrone, is at the heart of the circulation area and where the newspaper’s editorial and advertising offices are sited. Although covering a largely rural area, there are significant business and commercial centres dotted throughout the sprawling circulation area. The Constitution has long been known for its in-depth coverage of community life and issues that concern the local populace.[citation needed] This was recognised when it received the Northern Ireland and UK Weekly Newspaper of the Year accolade in 1999.

At the heart of the community, the Constitution covers the full spectrum of local life, right across the communities. With its finger on the pulse of developments in local government, health, education, policing, agriculture, arts and culture, and sport, the newspaper also prides itself on its contribution from village and church correspondents, right across its area.

Founded in the 1920s, the Portadown was a poor second to the longer-established Portadown News, and – until it was taken over in the 1950s by James Morton remained that way. Under his expertise, it passed the News circulation and he took over the News in the early 1970s and ran both as a bi-weekly operation until he finally closed the Portadown News.

On Jim Morton’s death, the Morton Newspaper Empire – which comprised around 22 titles in Northern Ireland, passed on to his son John who sold them to Scottish Radio, who consequently sold them on to Johnston Press.

The editor of the Portadown Times is Alistair Bushe who took over two years ago from David Armstrong who was in charge for more than 40 years.

Portadown News Newspaper Northern Ireland was a satirical web-based newspaper dealing with Northern Irish politics and culture. It was written (initially anonymously) by journalist and political commentator Newton Emerson, a Portadown resident. Its format and style were similar to The Onion.

The site was updated biweekly, with the first issue appearing in March 2001. In November 2001 Freeserve dropped the site after receiving complaints. The next month Emerson was forced to leave his job with a Belfast telecommunications company after the republican Andersonstown News named him as the website’s editor. The newspaper accused Emerson of unionist bias. Emerson had written anonymously out of fear of reprisals but suffered no consequences from being outed beyond receiving occasional email threats.

The site’s “reporters” included loyalist Billy Shootspatrick, republican Anne Phoblacht and unionist Will March. There were also contributions by Portadown residents, including Tyler McSpide.

The website resulted in a weekend spin-off newspaper column in the Sunday World, and a bestselling book. Emerson has also written for the Irish Times, the Irish News and the Irish edition of The Daily Mirror. In 2005 Emerson stopped writing the Portadown News in order to write a column for The Mirror, but the site remains online.
